President Mutharika observes that much as the country has progressed with robust investment programmes, the important strides towards the long term goal of diversifying the economic base has met with huge economic setbacks.

“These are setbacks that reflect chronic and structural problems we never seriously tackled for the last fifty-two-years” says Mutharika. “This is the price we pay for having an economy with a weak productive sector,” he adds.

Malawi is therefore suffering the consequences of being a consuming nation that does not aggressively produce and export.

SinceMalawians have been importing too much because they are not patriotic enough to promote their own industries and services,under Buy Malawi Strategy, the country is set to turn around its investment fortunes.

“We are talking of change of business strategies,” the Malawi President states.
